All Eyes Are On You by Seraphina Wilson
Wall Piece
Vitreous enamels, copper, brown underglaze pencil, found frame, commercial D-clip
5.75 in x 3.25 in.
This is an individual enamel wall form that concentrates on the feeling of being watched. I found a bowl-shaped frame, thought the shape was interesting, and wanted to dome the metal in one direction or another to flow with the shape of the frame. I cut out a circle shape and domed it, then decided it would work best if I made the dome push into our space. I applied two coats of white enamel powder on both sides of the form. I then used a transparent “Woodrow Red” layer, which was added around a self-made stencil cut-out of the eye motifs. After the color was set, I applied etch-all on the front of the enamel. I used the brown underglaze pencil to draw the eye motifs. When the work was done, I used a commercial D-clip on the back of the form to hang it on the wall. My intention was to create a slight feeling of unease when viewed, making the viewer feel like they are being seen from every corner of the work.
