Virtual Workshop: Procreate and Digital Design for Enamelists

Planning your enamel work digitally is a flexible and fun way to efficiently create a

design plan, save paper and try out different design options. In this class, students will

learn the basics of the Procreate drawing app, and how to take designs from their

sketchbook into the app to refine and finalize a design. We will go over all the basic

tools of Procreate, modifying and collaging designs, creating an enamel color library

and more. In addition to learning the digital design aspects of this process, we will talk

about transferring our design back to a physical template for cloisonné wire bending or

other transfer methods. Students will leave with an understanding of how to turn an idea

on paper into a clean and clear digital plan that can be applied to a variety of enamel

techniques.

- Introduction

- Sketchbook overview and presentation of examples

- Tools overview (Ipad, apple pencil, sketchbook and drawing tools)

- Procreate tools introduction

- Creating a color palette of enamels in Procreate

- Inserting and tracing photos of sketchbook

- Drawing modification - scaling, warping etc

- Final outlining

- Color planning

- Detail planning

- Physical transfer techniques

Skill Level: Intermediate: Some Experience and Basic Understanding of Enameling Needed

Bio

Evelyn Kline is a metalsmith, enamelist and illustrator from the mountains of North

Carolina. She earned her BFA in Studio Art from Appalachian State University in 2024.

Evelyn makes narrative jewelry and objects depicting her life and experiences using

cloisonné enamel. Drawing from her journaling and illustration practice, she uses these

enamel illustrations as a way to further understand the significance of everyday

moments. Kline was recently an Artist in Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts and

Crafts and is currently based in western NC.
