Friday, October 9 and 16, 1-4:00pm ET

How many ways can decals be manipulated? While a straight image is fine, how can you go beyond that point and treat the decal as another component of a layered and worked surface?

This workshop will cover:

-sandblasting using tapes

-shaped resists cut by hand and with a Cricit machine.

-incorporating foils

-carving with burrs

-overlapping decals

-working with overglazes and underglazes.

-overfiring and simple raku.

-incorporating decals with cloisonne

- adding glass beads

- using enamel and decals over mokume.

Intermediate: Some Experience and Basic Understanding of Enameling Needed

Students will receive a preselected packet of decals in the mail. Please register by October 1 to guarantee delivery but the first class session.

Bio: Patricia Nelson was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, in the time of late modernism. Her education in metalsmithing and enameling began in Seattle at the University of Washington and continued at the State University of New York at New Paltz where she received her MFA. Throughout the three decades that she was at Ball State University, she taught all aspects of metals and foundation design. She is currently working on combinations of metal, enamel and stones. Her current enamels feature multiple decals, and she is now exploring silver and copper mokume as an enameling surface.
As an artist and educator, she has been active in the Enamelist Society, where she is President, as well as in SNAG. She has exhibited metal and enamel work throughout the US for over three decades and has presented lectures and workshops nationwide. Awards and grants have included BSU Outstanding Teaching and Distinguished Creative Endeavor Awards and numerous university and Indiana Arts Commission grants. In 2014 she was named as the first George and Frances Ball Distinguished Professor of Art.
