Electroforming + Enameling: The Pairing of Surface and Form with Katy Cassell
This is a virtual workshop. In this 2-session workshop, students will learn how electroforming and enameling can work together to create small-scale sculptural objects that pop with color. Freed from the tyranny of soldering, enamelists can create 3D forms sculpturally and intuitively, with fewer worries during firing. During the first session, students will learn about copper electroplating and how to prepare models to be plated. Additive and subtractive methods for sculpting wax will be demonstrated, resulting in forms and textures ripe for enameling. Tips for successful plating and wax removal will be covered. Session two will focus on enameling techniques for three-dimensional forms. How to get enamel to adhere to the 3D surface? How to fire without trivet marks? Multiple methods will be explored. To make the most of this workshop, students will need access to an electroplater, or purchase the Electroforming Kit [1] from Rio Grande. For students without access, the instructor will plate one sample per student in the weeks between sessions 1 and 2, for a small fee and with pre-paid shipping.
This is a two-day virtual workshop to be hosted on November 3rd and November 17th, 2023 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm eastern time. Recordings will be made available for everyone. It usually takes a day to get everything edited and uploaded for you. We will leave everything posted for the workshop attendees for THREE WEEKS after completion of the workshop.

Bio: Katy Cassell was introduced to enameling at the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio the 1990’s, and went on to earn an MFA in jewelry, metals, and enameling, from Kent State University. She worked as an archaeological illustrator, museum educator, and college professor before becoming the instructor of metals and enameling at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville, SC, where she balances teaching with her studio practice. Enamel’s inexhaustible potential, from installation to jewelry, has held her attention throughout her career. Highlights include the exhibition of her work in Taiwan as part of the Blaze International Enameling Exhibition, and at eight solo exhibitions, including at the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Mesa, AZ. She was awarded a National Artists Teachers Fellowship to travel to England to work with Elizabeth Turrell and to study rock art, fossils, and historical enamels at the British Museum. She earned a doctorate in education in 2022 from Converse University in SC.
