"Glass Ceiling" by Ashley English
SURFACE MATTERS: GRIT OR GLOSS
• What issues or information from a current, critical, cultural, social perspective prey on your mind
• Depth of the matter, how will it be presented—superficially or deeply?
• Commentary to what extent?
• Treatment regarding finish, or it can be a declarative phrase – surface does matter.
Surface becomes that final critical step in an effective and convincing concept. In recent years, enamelists have explored finish in more innovative and creative ways than was seen in the entire history of enameling. From cracks to underfired gritty surfaces, from matte to traditional highly finished gloss, the surface of an enamel is no longer a standard step, rather it is a conscious choice the artist makes.
“Grit or Gloss" explores two of the extremes available to enamelists. Any, all or somewhere between can and will be investigated for this exhibition call.
Artists may submit up to two entries. Submitted work must have been completed in the last two years and not have been accepted into previous Enamelist Society exhibitions. Students may be enrolled in ANY academic institution, art center, craft program, individual studio education program, or self-taught. For this exhibition, a student must not regularly sell their work. The deadline for submissions is 11:59:59 PM EST, April 7, 2020. Artists with accepted pieces will be notified by the end of April 2020.
The jurors for this exhibition will be Charity Hall, Anne Havel, and Barbara McFadyen.
The exhibition will travel with its first stop at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock for June and July of 2020. It will be there in conjunction with The Enamelist Society summer workshops. Following that, the exhibition will then travel to Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA before making its final stop at Millersville University in Millersville, PA.

"Alchemy," a term that refers to a seemingly magical power of transmutation as well as the ancient chemical philosophy of turning base metal into gold or silver, can apply to enamel as it is magically transformted by heat.

The Exhibitions highlight the best in contemporary enamels produced in the last 2 years. The Student Exhibition, which is always very inspiring, features the work of students in accredited degree programs throughout the world. The Exhibitions will be hosted at the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR from July 31-August 7, 2019.
