Diane Echnoz Almeyda

Pierced Plique-a-jour
Location: Carpenter Foundation - Bellevue, KY

From a solid sheet of silver to a jewel-like silver framed work of art, we will work with drill, saw and enamels to create a special pendant to wear or enjoy hanging in a sunny window. Beginners should have no problem learning the technique of plique-a-jour enameling. It is recommended all students should have a steady hand and good eyesight (magnification suggested) for success in this workshop.

Diane Echnoz Almeyda is a studio enamelist specializing in plique-a-jour, often called the "tour-de-force" of enameling techniques. She has won numerous awards at shows and exhibitions around the country. Her work has been featured in several miniaturists' magazines around the world as well as in Lapidary Journal. It also appears in several books on enameling in addition to other art publications. She is a member of the Enamelist Society, Enamel Guild South, Society of North American Goldsmiths, Florida Society of Goldsmiths, Florida Craftsmen, and the International Guild of Miniature Artisans. She shares her knowledge of this seldom seen technique by teaching at workshops and privately at her studio in Miami, Florida. Some of her work can be seen on her website.

Katy Bergman Cassell

Industrial Materials, Artistic Expression
Location: Kent State - Kent, OH

Harness the power of KSU's giant industrial kiln! Use porcelain enameled steel, liquid enamel, drawing, painting and screen-printing techniques to create successful, moving imagery on a large scale.

Katy Bergman Cassell was born in 1975, and lives in Akron, OH, where she maintains an active studio making enamel wall work and jewelry for exhibition, sale, and private commissions. She attended the Cleveland Institute of Art (BFA 1998, 1st Gund Award) and Kent State University (MFA 2004), where she is currently teaching drawing, metals, and enameling. Her work was recently included in Pattern and Decoration: A Group Exhibition, the Claypool-Young Art Gallery at Morehead University, Morehead KY, curated by Jennifer Reis, and exhibited at SOFA CHICAGO 2006 with Mobilia Gallery of Cambridge, MA. Her first solo exhibition is scheduled for September 2007 at the Lipscomb Gallery of the Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville, SC.

Mary Chuduk

New Forms for Enameling
Location: Columbus, OH

In this workshop we will use very techniques to manipulate and hand form woven and expandable copper mesh, and also use corrugating, smocking and tooling thin gauge copper to make excitingly diverse dimensional forms for jewelry and small sculpture. Brilliant hues of enamel will be added by wet packing, spraying, sifting, and luster application. The challenge to personalize sculptural statements with mixed media additions will be addressed. Beginners to advanced welcome.

Mary Chuduk, studio artist, author, and guest curator from Tempe, Arizona, has extensively exhibited her metal work nationally and internationally (Korea, Switzerland, Japan, India, Russia, Spain, and Canada). Enameling is the primary medium she uses in making jewelry, vessels and sculptural objects from copper and silver. She teaches privately and has given workshops across the US and in Canada, Australia, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and Georgia. In September 2007, she will exhibit and teach in Seoul, Korea.

Jeanette Landenwitch

Exploring Precious Metal Clay for Enamelists
Location: Carpenter Foundation - Bellevue, KY

In this workshop we’ll explore how the unique characteristics of PMC can be creatively utilized when designing PMC pieces. There will be a short demo, then students will make their pieces. You’ll have fun texturing, folding, molding, shaping, firing, finishing, and applying the enamel color. Work flat or dimensionally. We’ll discuss how PMC can be incorporated into your work. Bring your questions and ideas. Finished pieces will be available to view as samples and for inspiration. Some PMC experience is recommended. Come play in the clay!

Jeanette Landenwitch, currently the executive director of the International PMC Guild, is a Senior PMC Instructor for Rio Grande and teaches classes and workshops across the country. She has written many articles about PMC, as well as published her first book on the subject. Her award-winning work has been featured in articles and exhibited internationally, and is included in the permanent collection of PMC work at Mitsubishi Materials Corporation in Japan.

Patricia Nelson

Sculptural Enamels
Location: Columbus, OH

Enameling on 3 dimensional forms opened up a new world for metalsmiths and enamelists. For those who have only enameled on flat or slightly curved forms enameling fully in the round on more complex cut and formed surfaces is a new experience. We will make geometric or organic forms for use in jewelry or sculptural / functional objects using 18 gauge copper, saws, drills, stakes and mallets. Bring a drawing of a shape, a photo of a flower, a cut paper form and we will make it in metal and enamel.

The process will begin with paper model making and, during the design process, ways of attaching the enamel to other forms - metal or otherwise - will be covered. We will enamel these forms by sifting and wet packing. Stencils, foils, decals, ceramic pencils etc. will be demonstrated.

Pat Nelson's education in enamels began at the University of Washington and continued at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Throughout the past 25 plus years that she has been teaching at Ball State University in Indiana, she has taught all aspects of metals and design including enameling. Her current work combines three dimensional sculptural enamels with forged wire into vessels that speak of the mathematical structure of the natural world. Recent enameling workshops have included Craftsummer at Miami University and workshops in Texas and Michigan.

Larissa Podgoretz

Painting with Oxides
Location: Carpenter Foundation - Bellevue, KY

Working with oxides/overglaze colors gives the enamelist a means to achieve a painterly effect with the ability to create fine detail, the delicacy of watercolor washes, and the immediacy of the hand-drawn line. It is also part of the classic Limoges technique. This workshop will cover plate preparation, color preparation, and the different methods of working with the medium.

Larissa Podgoretz was born in the USSR. After living and working in the U.S. in the 1980’s she now lives, teaches, and works in Israel. Her Limoges enamels have won numerous awards.

This workshop is made possible by a generous donation from the Woodrow W. Carpenter Foundation.

Merry-Lee Rae

Small Scale Cloisonne Enameling
Location: Carpenter Foundation - Bellevue, KY

This is wonderful opportunity for students to learn a methodical approach to Cloisonné Enameling. Over the last 30 years, Merry-Lee has become known for her lyrical wirework and lush shading techniques. Learn to combine Science with Art to create projects of your own while taking the mystery out of this intricate technique. Merry-Lee will share her methods starting with construction of the fine silver base and ending with grinding and finishing using lapidary equipment. You will leave this workshop with the experience and inspiration to take this ancient craft and make it your own.

Merry Lee Rae lives and works in Aptos, CA. She sees herself as a dedicated romantic. Her cloisonné jewelry is her voice. See her work on her website.
